Room Overview

Kalymnos is renowned for its rich fishing heritage, and this room is a tribute to the island’s most iconic type of fishing boat – the trata. The trata was a traditional fishing vessel widely used in Kalymnos during the 20th century, known for its sturdy design and unique structure.

Measuring around 10–12 meters in length, it was distinguished by a horizontal wooden beam at the bow, resembling a ram. This feature allowed fishermen to easily board or disembark when docking at the shore. This room celebrates the deep connection between Kalymnian culture and the sea, offering guests a window into the island’s proud maritime past through authentic storytelling and design.

Room Overview

The room is named after Ioannis Paneras, who purchased the building in 1913 together with Charalambos Loizos. Uncle and nephew, both refugees from Krini (modern-day Çeşme), a historic Greek town in Asia Minor, managed to establish a large bakery on the third floor of the property. The building was vertically divided: the southern half housed the bakery business, while the northern half served as the family residence.

Charalambos was originally from the village of Petra in Cyprus and later migrated to Krini, where he met and married Angeliki Charokammenou. A few years later, the couple found refuge on the island of Kalymnos. This room pays tribute to the resilience, heritage, and entrepreneurial spirit of the early 20th-century Greek refugees who shaped the legacy of this historic mansion.

Room Overview

Kalymnos has a recorded history dating back to the 4th millennium BC. Initially, the island was known as Kalydna, and it was renamed Kalymnos from the 4th century BC onward. The most likely etymology of the name comes from “kalos” = beautiful, and “ydna” (from “ydor”) = water. This suggests that the word Kalydna means an island with beautiful, fine waters.
